Tamara Vasilyevna can rightfully be considered one of the pioneers in the study of plant stress. She has dedicated over 60 years to researching the mechanisms of plant adaptation to oxygen deficiency. Tamara Vasilyevna is the author of over 300 scientific papers. Her hypotheses are now being confirmed at the most advanced molecular biological level. Professor T.V. Chirkova's expertise is recognized not only in Russia but also internationally. Her work continues to be actively cited. Prof. T.V. Chirkova's research group is developing at the Department of Plant Physiology and Biochemistry at St. Petersburg State University, and it is always full of young people. Tamara Vasilyevna was known for her warm attitude towards her students. Under her guidance, more than 80 diploma theses and master's theses were defended, and 11 people defended their PhD theses, while 3 people defended their doctoral theses. It is safe to say that T.V. Chirkova has created a scientific school of ecological plant physiology, and her students continue the research she started, not only in Russia but also in other countries. Her extensive experience in lecturing has led to the creation of several textbooks on plant respiration and sustainability.
Tamara Vasilyevna Chirkova has had a long and interesting life. As a 10-year-old girl, she worked with other schoolchildren on a vegetable seedling farm in besieged Leningrad. Later, for this work, she was awarded the Medal "For the Defense of Leningrad". She retained this active life position throughout her life.
