On July 20, an expedition of the Floating University of MIPT and the Institute of Oceanology of the Russian Academy of Sciences began in Arkhangelsk, which will last more than 40 days and will end with a landing in Tiksi. As part of the expedition, studies of water masses on the shelf and the continental slope of the seas of the Russian Arctic will be carried out. The expedition consists of 20 scientists representing leading scientific and educational organizations, including IO RAS, MGI RAS, IDG RAS, CMI MSU, St. Petersburg State University and FSBSI ARRIAM. 26 students, participants of the All-Russian Floating University program, will be involved in the research. According to the organizers, the history of the Floating University program has been going on for more than 30 years, starting with the UNESCO program with the leading role of the Geological Faculty of Moscow State University. By decision of the Interdepartmental National Oceanographic Commission of the Russian Federation, the coordinating role for the development and implementation of the Floating University project is assigned to MIPT.
The expedition is represented by Kirill Antonets, a leading researcher, winner of the Russian President's Prize in Science and Innovation for young scientists. Kirill Sergeevich will provide scientific guidance to the team, within the framework of which it is planned to study the diversity of the marine microbiota of the Arctic, aimed at identifying microorganisms producing economically valuable compounds, including those with antibiotic properties.
