The role of non-coding RNAs in the response to abiotic stress in pea (Pisum sativum L.)

Drought stress is one of the factors reducing crop yields, and its harmful effects are increasing due to global climate change. Pea is an important agricultural crop in the Russian Federation and abroad, but the molecular mechanisms that determine pea resistance to drought have not been sufficiently studied. Unlike other plant objects, the role of non-coding RNAs in resistance to abiotic stress in peas has been virtually unexplored. As part of the work, pea genotypes with contrasting manifestations of the drought resistance trait will be studied: using transcriptome sequencing, an analysis of non-coding RNAs in plant roots and shoots under drought conditions will be carried out, including variants with inoculation with nodule bacteria. The representation of these RNAs in the transcriptomes of the aboveground and underground parts of the plant will be described, which will indicate the role of certain non-coding RNAs in plant development processes. As a continuation of the work, it is possible to test the effect of the identified non-coding RNAs on pea drought resistance using transformation in the hairy roots system.

The study was supported by the Russian Science Foundation in 2025, the project implementation begins in September 2025.
